Barin Sports Develops Graphene Smart Textiles to Transform Sports Technology

Speaking about the company's latest developments, Grozdanov highlighted how Barin Sports
recently expanded its work beyond traditional sports science by exploring smart textiles and
advanced wearable materials. By understanding and developing these new materials and
technologies to reduce costs and improve accessibility, performance monitoring tools previously used only in elite sports can increasingly be applied in everyday environments as well.
“The goal is to open a much larger addressable market where performance monitoring and data- driven decision making are not limited to professional athletes, but can also benefit everyday users,” he explained.
The most important update was the development of a partnership with the Korean Advanced
Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), where Barin Sports will collaborate to integrate
graphene into textile materials. This technology will enable conductive fibers to be embedded
directly into fabrics, which will allow clothing to capture biochemical and biological signals from the human body without disrupting a person’s daily life.
“Graphene, as a high-technology material, we managed to make electrically conductive,
which makes it suitable for smart clothing and for electrodes that can capture biosignals
from the human body. Graphene threads can be embroidered or woven into garments that
can capture these biosignals without the person even noticing.”
He added that previous attempts at smart clothing often relied on surface-level components that were expensive and difficult to maintain. Grozdanov emphasized that embedding graphene within the material will allow the textile to retain its structural properties while also functioning as a sensor platform.
“The downside of smart textiles so far is that they are not durable enough over time, they cannot withstand enough cycles of use and washing, and they are very expensive.”
And while the material combines extremely high strength with minimal weight, this makes it particularly suitable for wearable technologies and advanced smart textile applications.
“It is between 200 and 300 times stronger than steel, while at the same time being extremely
light,” he said, emphasizing the wide range of potential uses for the material.
This new 10-year partnership with the KAIST is expected to lead to the launch of a new product line using these smart textiles, and initially targeted markets will be South Korea, China and Australia. First garments will be designed for active lifestyle and urban wear. Initially, they will combine advanced materials with the Barin Sports brand, serving as a stepping stone toward the development of smart textiles built on the company’s expertise in sensing technologies.
